HVAC standards and DTUs: the commissioning engineer's key references

HVAC commissioning operates within a dense framework of standards. Knowing the applicable standards and DTUs ensures that installations comply and protects you legally in the event of a dispute. Here are the essential references.

DTUs (Documents Techniques Unifiés — French standard codes of practice)

  • • DTU 65.11: Safety devices for central heating systems (relief valves, expansion, etc.).
  • • DTU 65.14: Installation of hot water underfloor heating.
  • • DTU 68.3: Mechanical ventilation systems. THE reference DTU for commissioning engineers working on air systems.
  • • DTU 60.11: Design rules for sanitary plumbing and DHW systems.
  • • DTU 45.11: Thermal insulation of pipework — important for checking lagging.

European and international standards

  • • NF EN 16798-1: Energy performance of buildings — Ventilation. Defines the IAQ categories (I to IV) and the associated airflow rates.
  • • NF EN 12237: Air-tightness of ductwork (classes A, B, C, D).
  • • NF EN 14134: Ventilation for buildings — Performance testing of components.
  • • NF EN 378: Refrigerating systems and heat pumps — Safety and environmental requirements.
  • • ISO 5801: Performance testing of fans — the reference standard for fan curves.

ASHRAE standards (international reference)

  • • ASHRAE 62.1: Ventilation and indoor air quality (the global reference).
  • • ASHRAE 90.1: Energy performance of buildings (the basis of LEED certification).
  • • ASHRAE Guideline 0: The reference commissioning process.
  • • ASHRAE 55: Thermal environmental conditions for comfort — defines comfort zones (Givoni chart).

French regulations

  • • RE2020: Environmental regulation for new buildings (since 2022).
  • • Tertiary Decree: Reduction in consumption of buildings > 1,000 m².
  • • Order of 24 March 1982: Ventilation rates in dwellings.
  • • Order of 30 November 2005: Prevention of Legionnaires' disease in DHW systems.
  • • NF C 18-510: Electrical authorisations — the foundation of any work on HVAC installations.
FIELD TIP

Build yourself a binder (physical or digital) with the relevant extracts from each standard. On site, having the right DTU to hand within 30 seconds can defuse a dispute with an inspection body.
